Though he relied on archetypes for some of the minor characters (e.g. I had absolutely no problem following the action, even though I listened to the entirety of the story while working. At least in Warship, Dalzelle's style was remarkably lucid. I haven't read anything from the Omega Rising series, and this was my first exposure to Joshua Dalzelle. I honestly was a bit hesitant to believe all of the reviews, as I had never seen so much glowing for the first book in a series. All of the other reviews have pretty much said all there was to be said, and I echo their words. Boyett has definitely become my favorite military scifi/space opera narrator, and with Warship, he once again gives a performance that is nothing less than stellar. Yet, somehow he still can make me believe that I'm in a completely different universe with a whole different set of characters, all of them with unique nuances. After listening to every Star Force, Undying Mercenaries, and Troy Rising audiobook with other standalone novels he performed, I feel like I've heard the full spectrum of Boyett's voices a dozen times over. I was initially drawn to this book because I was looking for other Mark Boyett performances. It was fun to listen too, Ill listen to the others, when they come out.A compelling and satisfying underdog space opera This book touches a bit on those plot lines. Shows with old outdates spaceships and damaged crews having to rise to the occasion.

I grew up with shows like BSG and Star Blazers. The action sequences are really short and tense with long planning sessions, plenty of time for character development. So they need to be clever in more deliberate ways. Because distance between objects in space are really far apart strategy becomes more important, they will fire a missile and wait for hours before they know if its actually successful. I've heard it said that war is "interminable boredom punctuated by moments of terror" and this book is very much like that (but not boring :) ). Even in their communications theres signifiant delays.

"real", is that possible in a space ship/alien drama, does it sound stupid? You see, they didn't have many plot "conveniences", theres no teleporters or anything to get them from point A to B quickly to move from one action sequence to another (with the exception of an FTL). The ship is crewed by misfits and have some amount of growth through the story. It has characters that are interesting and are experienced (older). I don't think of myself as a military procedural book reader.
